Do You Know?

As a business owner, do you know how and when your important data is backed up? Have you seen it tested? Have you thought about what would happen if you lost your servers and couldn't get them back? It's important to ask these questions, and even more important to take immediate steps to become confident your critical systems could be recovered in the event of  a disaster.

Disaster Recovery Planning Is About Removing Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt

"...we have someone as trusted and knowledgeable watching over our system..."  - Susan Klar, Screen Door Inc. (see more testimonials)

How would your business survive a disaster? Everyone talks about having a disaster recovery plan, but many business owners would be faced with losing their business if disaster actually struck. There are many types of disasters which could take a business out at the knees - have you considered what would happen if any of the following occurred?
Technical Threats Human Threats Natural Threats (premesis damage)
Server/major equipment failure Theft Internal/external flooding
Viruses and other malware Vandalism or sabotage Fire
Operating System/software failure Contamination Seismic activity
System upgrade/replacement Accidental building damage Snow, wind and ice storms
    Labour force disruption
    Economic disruption
    Human error
    Loss of key staff member(s)

While interviewing business owners and asking the question about disaster recovery, we are often met with a blank stare, avoidance, or simply the feeling they do not want to think or talk about it. It's like talking about life insurance. In reality, it should be though of  more like health insurance. Today, there is no good reason why a business should be without a high level of comfort their business could survive a disaster.

Disaster Recovery Plan
Planning kits pricing is all over the map, and most are sold as templates. Templates are great, but the real work is in applying them to your business and keeping them fresh. As situations change, your DRP should be updated.

GearyTech manages many of the elements of our customer's DRP. We have an excellent template available which covers the essentials most small-mid sized companies need to get themselves through troubled times. Some of our Managed Services plans include this - including updating the plan on a periodic basis. <Contact us> for further information.

Backup And Disaster Recovery Systems
The very beginning of any good Disaster Recovery Plan includes a good backup and disaster recovery system. GearyTech's Managed Services platform includes software from Acronis which not only backs up, but takes critical "snapshots" of your servers and workstations so they can be restored - even to different hardware - in the event of a disaster. Additionally, we move your backups off-site to our data centre daily so you don't have to worry about assigning someone to take tapes or hard drives home with them. Our monitoring tools alert us if any backups fail, and we can remedy and reschedule these backups remotely. Restoring individual files or entire systems is a snap.

Testing Recovery Of Your Critical Systems

We test customer backups on our bench on a regular basis (depends on level of Managed Services Plan). This involves restoring servers and critical workstations in a test environment to be certain that we could do so in an emergency. Too often, techs do not have access to the backups, or need to restore back to your live environment in order to prove your backups work. With GearyTech's Managed Services, we eliminate this problem and certify your backups actually work.
