Getting projects done in business is a bit of an art. SMB's typically don't have anyone specifically trained in Project Management. Business owners and management, although likely the ones with the right experience to get the job done, should not task themselves with Project Management; they are likely to be the cause of the project going over budget or taking too long.

Rather, business owners/management should fill the role of Executive Sponsor and leave the project management to someone specifically trained in this discipline.

The Project Manager enters at the very beginning of a project; during the period of time when you are defining goals, objectives, scope, budget, resources and timelines. In fact, it is critical to the success of your project to apply proven methodologies to the above processes.

The Project Manager brings process, facilitation, delegation, escalation, change management and problem resolution skills to the table. Most of their knuckle grinding work is done at the beginning of the project - to get all the planning process complete. During the balance of the project, they execute and adjust the plan based on how the plan is performing and any changes to the plan which cannot be stopped. Decisions which affect cost, time or quality are escalated to the Executive Sponsor (you), and most other decisions are dealt with among the project team.

The Project Manager is a master at getting things done, and uses essentially the same process whether building a website or building a bridge.
